While many of us were watching the Super Bowl Sunday, workers with the Georgia SPCA were rescuing eight puppies from the foundation of a dilapidated home.
The puppies were stuck in a hole in what was once the foundation of the house off of Moreland Avenue, near I-285. All that remains of the structure is the foundation and the chimney. Rescuers say the area was used as a dumping ground for trash: everything from mattresses to wood scraps.
The Georgia SPCA was notified about the puppies after a woman who feeds stray dogs in the neighborhood, realized that two of the pregnant dogs she had been feeding had apparently given birth. Kathy Hemmings found the dogs' litters and managed to rescue five puppies herself. She called the SPCA when she realized more needed help.
After several hours of work, the Georgia SPCA staff managed to dig out the remaining eight puppies Sunday. All of the pups were severely flea and tick infested, but are now recovering and ready for adoption.
The puppies are four or five weeks old. SPCA officials say they'll be fostered for several weeks, spay or neutered, vaccinated and put up for adoption.
