Some Metro Atlanta families seeking fresh, local organic beef are buying a whole, half or quarter cow from Indian Creek Angus in Carnesville and several other cattle farms and ranches throughout Georgai.
Dennis Barron started the farm as a hobby several years ago. Now it's a thriving business for he and his wife Carol.
"We've seen a real increase and I think there is a change in the U.S. as a whole, people wanting to get out of the industrial food system," said Carol Corbin. Corbin said the cattle are grass fed and free of any hormoes or antibiotics. "Grass fed beef is nutritionally much better for you," she said. "It is much leaner than grain fed beef and also has more nutrients like Omega 3," she said.
Customers order either a whole half or quarter of a cow, which is processed at a nearby facility. "You get about twenty percent steaks, about 30 percent ground beef, about 30 percent roasts, about 15 percent miscellaneous, like short ribs," said Barron. " A lot of people will buy a whole cow and split it with neighbors and family," said Corbin. She said a seven cubic foot freezer will hold the meat from half a cow.
Prices are the lowest for a whole cow. "If you buy a whole you end up paying a little over five dollars a pound," she said. That's quite bit less than retail prices for grass fed beef and in some cases even grain fed beef.
