Kwesi Johnson, 22, is wanted for firearms violations
ATLANTA -- Kwesi Johnson is 11Alive's Fugitive of the Week for September 19, 2012. Johnson, 22, is wanted by the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the ATF. He has been indicted on federal firearms violations.
Johnson is one of several suspects charged as the result of a federal sting in June 2011. During a seven month undercover investigation called "Operation ATL Blaze", 400 guns were taken off the streets.
The ATF set up a fake smoke shop in a store front on Campbellton Road. Undercover agents posed as store managers and employees and put out word on the street that they were interested in buying firearms and drugs.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Eric Heinze said Johnson was one of many people who fell for the scheme. "He went in there with some illegal narcotics, made contact with the undercover agents posing as smoke shop workers and sold illegal narcotics and was in possession of a firearm," Heinze said.
Forty-nine defendants were indicted on either state or federal charges. Forty-eight suspects were arrested. "There's one guy out there by the name of Kwesi Johnson," Heinze said.
"We believe he's still in the area, the Campbellton Road and Cascade Road area," Heinze said. "He has a lot of friends and associates in those areas."
