Kids at Lyndon Academy in Cherokee County collect items for a homeless shelter.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- The United Way of Cherokee County gets donations all the time, but nothing like their recent gift.

It all came from kids as young as 5 and 6 years old at Lyndon Academy. They're little people with big hearts.

"We set our goal with 150 boxes," said Michelle Carter, a teacher at Lyndon Academy. "At the end we had 435 boxes and over 6,000 items donated to put in them."

"Some playdoh, [a] couple books, some stuffed animals, a tooth brush," third grader Caylee Roeder said of the contents in one box.

"Soap, shampoo and a towel. And, here's some hair thingies," fellow third grader Nathan Hall said of another box.

The 6,000 items were collected in only two weeks by just 54 kindergarteners through third graders.

They're donating the boxes to the Cherokee County Violence Center, a shelter that helps victims of domestic violence.

"Most of them have to leave in the middle of the night or without any warning, so therefore they don't have the basic things that we rely on like toothpaste or toothbrush or hairbrush," Susan Filiberto, the Area Director of United Way of Cherokee County, said of the shelter's women and children.

"I think they're going to feel really, really good to have something to do and things to entertain them and things they need," said Nathan.

"They can see how doing something so small and  - even though they're so young - how something like that can turn into something so big and help a lot of people," said Carter.
