WASHINGTON (USA Today) -- If a councilman in a city that hasn't been home to the Washington Redskins in 17 years has his way, the NFL franchise will change its name the Washington Redtails, a nod to the nickname of the famed Tuskegee Airmen of World War II.
According to the Washington Post, David Grosso, an independent on the D.C. council, hopes to introduce a non-binding resolution to change the "derogatory, racist name." The newspaper says Grosso has the support of two other council members.
It's been a while since civics class, but I think "non-binding" is another way of saying "has as much meaning as a Marion Barry for Robert Griffin III trade proposal."
The Post continues:
According to Grosso's resolution, which he plans to formally introduce in a few weeks, the 13-member council would declare that "District residents and their elected representatives should not tolerate commercial or other use of derogatory terminology relating to any people's racial identity, or which dishonors any person's race, or which dishonors the name Washington."
1. District residents shouldn't tolerate political grandstanding either, but here we are.
2. Grosso's enemy, besides a lack of power or mandate, is time. The clamor to change the Redskins name is best discussed in times of fan unease. That's why the issue was so big after the Redskins lost in the playoffs and RGIII suffered a knee injury.
People were upset. The name is, and always has been, derogatory. It was easy to be mad about the former and get vocal about the latter.
Now RGIII is doing jumping jacks at FedEx Field. The Redskins got five primetime games in 2013, including a Monday night home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. It's springtime - baseball, cherry blossoms, hockey playoffs. It's the rare few weeks in Washington where football isn't the main topic of conversation. Don't bring up this downer topic when people are excited. No one wants to have the umpteenth name discussion right now.
If Grosso really wants this, he should wait until RGIII looks gimpy in his first preseason game and then - BOOM - unleash the non-binding resolution. It will still be a meaningless non-binding resolution, but at least everyone will be paying attention.
3. All that being said, "Redtails" is the least-awful replacement name I've heard yet.
