Mandy Landefeld’s Top 5 Tips for quick design touches that can transform your house:

1. Streamline the stuff! Just cuz Aunt Betty gave you that whole collection of mini tea cups or cookie jars doesn't mean you have to keep them out. She gave them to you to bring you joy. If they don't anymore find them a home with someone else where they can and free your visual space. Here's our Q's to ask yourself...

  • Have I used this in the last year?
  • If I were shopping right now, would I buy this?
  • Is the only thing that's keeping me from getting rid of this is that I don't want to waste money?
  • Am I holding onto this solely for sentimental value?
  • Do I have a similar item that serves the same purpose?
  • Do I have a realistic plan to use this?
  • Does it fit me or my house?
  • Is it broken and I might fix it later? Prob not.

2. Get Organized! With my design clients the first thing we do is look around and see if the house is functioning for them. If you're shoving your kitchen stuff in the cabinets, it's time to get organized!

  • We call this "Hide Your Crazy" with our design clients.
  • Grab a large array (more than you think you'll need) of clear tubs, trays and organizational bins and play with them while you organize then return what you don't use.
  • Save trips to the store, buy lots of options
  • PUT AWAY BASKET
  • It takes 10 seconds to put something where it belongs
  • Organization is an investment in your sanity!

3. Let the light in! Natural light makes every home feeling bigger.

  • Clean your windows! You'd be amazed at how much light gets blocked by dirty windows!
  • Take down the plantation shutters or blinds and replace with full length curtains mounted high as possible.
  • Mounting them high creates a vertical line that makes your ceilings feel taller than they are! Mount curtain rods 6-8" wider than the window itself so you don't block the light. Get our full guide here https://sumptuousliving.net/how-to-hang-curtains/
  • Light and height make your house feel 30% bigger!

4. Update Your Hardware! Replace or repaint your door hardware and cabinet hardware. You can even spray paint old brass doorknobs and handles!

  • If your cabinets are in good shape and just need to be modernized, change the hardware!
  • Go from knobs to handles by adding an additional hole
  • Get a hardware template from the home improvement store for fool proof installation
  • Don't forget your doorknobs! Oil Rubbed Bronze doorknobs can make your home feel like new construction!
  • For as low as $10 per door or even less if you spray paint your old brass knobs with good spray paint!

5. Add Plants! Whether you have a green thumb or want to go the fake it till you make it route. Greenery brings a house to life.

  • Plants cost less than fresh flowers and bring life to a room
  • If you don't have a green thumb, get high quality artificial plants! (This is the fake orchid I made for my dining room! I kept killing them, so I gave up & went for fake)
