Big money at stake in Atlanta video gaming competition

Video gaming is quickly becoming just as big as regular sports.

"My brother introduced me one day, and I just kept playing it and playing it," said Casey Fowler, who is in Alpharetta this weekend playing the Smite Console Finals for his team, Astral Authority.

"When I first started they were like, here's $500 and then I qualified for CSL and they were like, here's 7 grand," said Casey, who’s only 17.

Cash prizes were in the millions in a 2014 Seoul, South Korea, competition.

"Gaming is huge,” said Thom Badinger, who comments on the games. “Right now, in 2017, it's getting to the point where the top-billed games are filling out arenas, like Staples Center selling out in a matter of minutes.

"But the fact that when the Stanley Cup is being watched by less people than are watching the League of Legends championship, blew me away."

Casey spends more than 40 hours a week gaming, on top of his school work. But mom is just going to have to live with it.

"She definitely supports me,” Casey said. “When she was my age, she didn't have as much money as I have so she definitely supports it."
