ATLANTA -- In recent years, the city of Atlanta has been flooded with new restaurants.

The Georgia Restaurant Association has estimated that in July, there were more than 3,000 restaurants in the city.

That’s up nearly 12 percent from 2008.

A top Atlanta retail expert, however, says the number of new openings could be reaching a saturation point.

“I think it’s just a matter of time before we see a little bit of a shakeout,” Kristen Morris, regional leasing director for Jamestown told the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The company is behind projects including Ponce City Market.

“I think it’s just a matter of time before we see a little bit of shakeout,” Morris said.

The Chronicle points out the closing of 4th & Swift in the Old Fourth Ward and Cockentrice at Krog Street Market as examples though pointing out the latter was quickly replaced.

Meanwhile, it sites NetFinancials showing a slowing of growth among more established restaurants in the city.
