Popular teen retailer rue21 is closing 400 stores nationwide, including five in metro Atlanta.

The Pittsburgh-based retailer announced the closings over the weekend, but pointed out that more than 700 stores would remain open nationwide, including more than two dozen in metro Atlanta.

In metro Atlanta, the Flowery Branch location at the Stonebridge Village Shopping Center has already permanently closed.

Other locations that are slated to be closed include the Bartow Marketplace on Marketplace Boulevard in Cartersville, the location at The Overlook on Line Creek Drive in Peachtree City, at the Lakeside Marketplace on North Cobb Parkway in Acworth and at North Point Mall in Alpharetta.

"It's true -- we are closing some stores. It was a difficult but necessary decision. But the good news is we still have hundreds of locations across the country, and our website rue21.com, open for business," the company wrote on its website.

While the Flowery Branch location is already closed, the retailer would not give dates as to when the remainder of the stores would be closing. Clearance sales are being offered at each location that is in the process of being shut down, however.
