A 10-year-old girl in Florida is recovering after she was bit by an alligator at a lake in southeast Orange County.

Officials say the girl was bitten at Lake Mary Jane.

About a dozen people were swimming in shallow water when the girl started screaming for help.

"Lifeguards saw that, blew their all clear whistle to clear the water, and got everybody out of the water," said Matt Suedmeyer, Orange County parks & recreation manager.

One visitor grabbed the child and brought her to shore. She had been bitten in the knee and the calf, and was taken to a nearby children’s hospital.

She is expected to survive.

The gator was caught and euthanized.
