8 students injured after school bus rear-ended by tractor-trailer on I-285

The injured students' conditions were not immediately known.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Eight students were injured in a school bus accident on Interstate 285 Monday afternoon.

According to DeKalb County Police, the wreck happened on I-285 southbound near Glenwood Road around 4:50 p.m. The bus, which had 19 students from Cedar Grove Middle School and Champion Theme School on it, was allegedly rear-ended by a tractor-trailer, according to DeKalb County Schools officials.

"The bus had stopped and evidently the truck was going too fast and he could not stop and he hit the back of the bus," DeKalb County Schools spokesperson Traci Jennings told 11Alive.

The injured students' conditions were not immediately known, but Jennings said one student hit her head on a window. Other injuries included head, back and neck injuries.

Several lanes were blocked on the interstate, but they were later cleared.

Authorities are now working to determine an exact cause of the crash, but officials say speed and weather conditions probably played a role.
