Alleged sex assault latest incident to happen on KSU campus this semester

Benjamin Wainscott IMAGE COBB COUNTY JAIL

A Kennesaw State student is sitting in jail, accused of sexually assaulting his victim inside his dorm room. But according to school records, this is not the first alleged attack to happen on campus this semester.

Benjamin Wainscott, 20, is in the Cobb County Jail after he was accused of sexually assaulting his victim. According to the arrest warrant, the victim said Wainscott invited her to dinner and, afterward, to his dorm, where he assaulted her. The warrant said the victim repeatedly told the 20-year-old to “stop.”

The warrant also states Wainscott sent text messages to the victim, “apologizing to the victim for forcing the victim to have sex with him.” The victim took that message to police.

11Alive's Ryan Kruger dug through campus crime reports from this school year and last and found that already, this semester, there have been five reported rapes inside a KSU dorm room. By this time last year, there had also been five alleged rapes on campus, but those were only the one that had been reported.

According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, 80 percent of all alleged rapes on college campuses are never reported.

11Alive spoke to one student on campus who said she shouldn't have to be worried for her safety while going to class.

“When I’m in the library sometimes I’m there until midnight, so when I’m walking to my car, I make sure I always know where the emergency buttons are and I always have my keys on me," said Savannah Ware. "It’s definitely got me a little shook up.”

According to the school, staff did not send out a mass alert for the latest alleged attack because they didn't feel Wainscott was a threat since he was arrested so quickly. In fact, the school's university police department was recently named the top campus police department in the country, thanks, in part, because of the services they have on campus for rape victims.
