ATLANTA -- Officials said an Atlanta Police Officer had to be transported to the hospital after sustaining an injury while trying to detain a suspect.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers got a call about a shoplifter at the Target on Caroline Street NE.
Security for the store detained the suspect in handcuffs until officers arrived on the scene. Police took the suspect into custody and began to place the suspect in the back of the patrol car.
At some point, police said, the suspect was able to escape, and during a foot chase the suspect ran into one of the officers, causing a small laceration to his face.
Emergency responders transported the officer to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. He is expected to be OK.
The suspect was later caught.
11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene where fire trucks, ambulances and police cars were parked in the 100 block of Holiday Avenue in Edgewood.
