Atlanta police release sketch of sex assault suspect

Police hope a sketch will lead to an arrest after a woman says she woke up in a strange apartment being sexually assaulted on New Year's Day.

The original report came from an incident on Jan. 1 in the 300 block of McDaniel Street SW. Police said the victim had been going to clubs with friends and fell asleep in a car after drinking heavily.

Her friends went into the Blue Ivory Club without her. One later told police that when they returned, she was gone. The victim told police that she woke up naked in a sparsely-furnished apartment with an unknown man performing oral sex. She immediately told the suspect to stop and asked him who he was.

Police said he began trying to calm the victim down, telling her that she was safe and her friends were OK. She believes she passed out again and, when she awoke, the suspect was gone.

She managed to find her clothing and escape the apartment. Unable to find the exit to the complex, she climbed a nearby fence and sustained some injuries. The victim said she also had bandages on her hands that she has no knowledge of having before.

The victim managed to flag down a bystander and call a friend. She was interviewed by police at Grady and said that she doesn't believe she was raped but did remember waking up to the assault.

The suspect is described as a black male with dark brown skin and high cheekbones. He was between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall with a slim build. He is believed to be in his mid-30s or early 40s. The victim also said he spoke with what she believed was an African accent.

Police are asking anyone with information to Call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477 (TIPS). Those with information that leads to an arrest and indictment are eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
