GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A Georgia inmate is dead after an apparent suicide at a state prison in Gwinnett County.

The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed that a corrections officer at Phillips State Prison near Buford found Demitri Carter unresponsive in his cell. The department said medical staff at the hospital tried to save the inmate's life but he ultimately pronounced dead around 2:50 p.m.

Carter was sentenced in 2014 on an aggravated assault charge out of Cherokee County. Georgia Department of Corrections officials are investigating the death as part of the department's standard procedure for handling inmate deaths.
