Volunteer for Saturday Make a Difference Day: Nation's biggest day of volunteering

Make a Difference Day Saturday is one of the biggest single days of volunteerism in the nation and 11Alive is joining its parent TEGNA in encouraging families to volunteer for important community projects on this day in metro Atlanta.

ATLANTA -- One of the single largest days for volunteerism in the nation will happen on Saturday giving participants the chance to give back in their communities.

11Alive is already gearing up for Make a Difference Day at Belmont Hills Elementary School in Smyrna, Georgia where we're inviting the public to get involved as well.

We live in a community of volunteerism and that is nothing new. But on Saturday, it will be in the spotlight as one of the nation's top days of bettering the lives of others in this total community effort of giving back - now in its twenty-fifth year.

11Alive to celebrate Make A Difference Day

It's a chance to make our communities a better place for all of us - something that could mean mentoring students or refurbishing gardens at local schools, working at local food banks or sprucing up in your neighborhood the goal is the same.

Our 11Alive team will be back this year at the Belmont Hills, joining Action Ministries in assembling 1,100 super packs of food for school youngsters. We're also teaming up with our parent company, TEGNA, Points of Light and volunteer teams from Arby’s, a leading sponsor of Make a Difference Day, in a variety of volunteer programs both with students and with the gardens and buildings of the school.

Points of Light is the world largest organization dedicated to volunteerism.

But the key in making Saturdays Make a Difference Day the most successful ever is the involvement of you and your family. There are numerous community volunteer programs underway that can use your help.

So 11Alive and TEGNA are encouraging our viewers to take part and make a meaningful impact in your community.

Go to 11alive.com/Community to check out what is available and how you can sign up.

TEGNA, with 46 television stations in 38 United States markets, is committed to serving the greater good in the communities it serves and will award $185,000 in community grants to qualifying community projects across America.

Be sure to select a community service project that you will find the most rewarding and suitable as you join in making Saturday the best Make a Difference Day ever.
