SMYRNA, Ga – A pair of street signs that were supposed to offer clear direction instead served as an optical illusion for drivers in Smyrna.

Signs that permitted U-turns along Windy Hill Road in Smyrna appeared to do just the opposite until commuters reached out to 11Alive’s Commuter Dude.

“I saw no U-turn,” says Ayanle Egalt. “It took me a long time to perceive it might be allowable.”

On Windy Hill Road just east of Atlanta Road is a lane that allows traffic to make a U-turn. Street markings indicate that reversing course is permitted. But two street signs appeared to conflict with the street markings.

“To me, red means stop,” says John Simeon. “I was sure I seen the line going through.”

A red circle around the signs fooled drivers into thinking there was a red mark outlawing U-turns.

it was a consulting engineer that recommended the signs.

“I actually thought it was the neat new standard design,” says Smyrna City Engineer Eric Randall.

Randall thought the signs were until he heard about the confusion. Days after 11Alive’s Commuter Dude brought it to his attention, the city made a change. There are new signs in place without the red circle.

Since the change, there have been no more complaints.
