Commuter Dude: Testing car cameras

More and more drivers are mounting dashboard cameras in their cars to capture video of their travels, and you don't have to break your budget to buy one.

ATLANTA – More and more drivers are mounting dashboard cameras in their cars to capture video of their travels, and you don’t have to break your budget to buy one.

There are numerous videos of dashcams capturing automobile accidents, bizarre behavior, and even a meteor in Russia.

Drivers use them so there is video evidence if they’re in an accident.

Commuter Dude Jerry Carnes found cameras for as little as $20. He tested the Scosche dashcam, and found that with anything, you get what you pay for.

On the upside, there is a motion detector so the camera will begin recording the moment you start the car. It's powered through the car's cigarette lighter.

The video quality is average at best.

The camera comes with a digital card that holds about 30-minutes of video. When the video card is full...the camera will begin recording over the oldest video. If you want a card that holds more you'll have to spend about $12.

And you'll need an adaptor to you can transfer the video from card to your computer. That's another couple of bucks.

Commuter Dude discovered that by perusing Youtube, you can find video from cameras with better quality, but you’ll have to spend $60 or more. There are dual front and rear cameras that are closer to $200.
