College Park officer recovering after being shot by suspect

The incident occurred following a chase that apparently originated in College Park.

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — A College Park police officer received minor injuries and a suspect was hurt in an officer-involved shooting that followed a police chase through multiple jurisdictions before coming to an end near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Saturday.

According to Gerald Walker with the City of College Park, the incident began when a College Park police officer running a license plate reader, was alerted to a vehicle associated with a Friday murder investigation.

"A chase ensued which ventured into adjoining jurisdictions," Walker said.

He said that East Point and Hapeville police officers, as well as troopers from the Georgia State Patrol, were involved in the chase. At one point during the dispute, according to the GBI, the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Edward Lee Cherry, got out of his vehicle and opened fire at the officers. Two College Park Police officers fired during the encounter and a third was shot in the neck.

Cherry then got back in his vehicle and left the scene according to the GBI.

Walker identified the injured College Park officer as Sgt. Charles Landrum. However, his injuries did not appear to be serious, according to Walker, and the GBI described him as being in stable condition at Atlanta Medical Center. He has already undergone a procedure to remove the bullet and was expected to be hospitalized overnight for observation.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, their troopers continued to pursue Cherry after he left the scene. The chase ended at Toffie Terrace and North Outer Loop Road where they said Cherry crashed.

The GBI said the suspect received a gunshot wound to the arm during the incident. He was treated at Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta and released for transport to the East Point jail.

Walker said that the GBI and the Fulton County District Attorney's Office have been notified and are investigating the incident.

GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles said this marks the 28th officer-involved shooting the agency has been asked to investigate since the beginning of 2020.
