A man has been charged in the Friday night shooting death of his girlfriend.

Police said John David Briggs, 23, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault in the death of Chessington Marshall, 26.

Gwinnett police responding to a person shot call in unincorporated Norcross Friday night found Marshall's body in the bathroom of a home in the 5500 block of Estates Court in unincorporated Norcross.

Investigators said a male caller to 911 said he shot his girlfriend in the chest during a domestic dispute.

Officers said when they arrived Briggs was still on the scene and initially taken into custody without incident.

While homicide and crime scene investigators responded to the location of the shooting, police said Briggs asked to be checked out by medical personnel. At that point, investigators said he ran off while still handcuffed.

Officers, along with a K9 unit and a DeKalb County police helicopter began to search for the suspect. He was found a short time later near the intersection of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Interstate 85. After a brief foot chase, Briggs suspect was re-captured, his hands still cuffed behind his back.
