15-year-old shot in Savannah while campaigning for Warnock, police say

The preliminary investigation revealed that while the teen was at the front door of one of the residences, the suspect fired a shot through the closed door.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — One person has been arrested after a 15-year-old was shot while campaigning in a Savannah neighborhood for Sen. Raphael Warnock, according to police.

Savannah Police said a 42-year-old man is facing charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

Officers said they were called to the 500 block of Hartridge Street around 5:35 p.m. Thursday to respond to the scene. When they arrived, they found the injured teen. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The preliminary investigation revealed that while the teen was at the front door of one of the residences, the suspect fired a shot through the closed door. Police said he was shot in the leg.

The suspect, who was found at the residence, was taken to the Chatham County jail.

According to Savannah NBC affiliate WSAV, Warnock said he was saddened to learn about the incident.

“I am praying for the victim and their family and wish them a full recovery," he said.

Warnock is running against Republican Herschel Walker in Georgia's upcoming U.S Senate runoff that takes place on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

"At this point, there is no indication the shooting was politically motivated," Savannah Police said in their news release.

The shooting is still under investigation.
