A man arrested for having what police suspected to be cocaine escaped from police custody Monday night.

Gwinnett Police said around 7 p.m., officers noticed Kevin Dawkins, 27, acting suspiciously in the area of Burdett Place in Snellville.

The officers approached him and found him in possession of suspected cocaine. When the officers tried to place him under arrest, there was an altercation and Dawkins was tased.

Dawkins was going in and out of consciousness, so officers called emergency medical aid and he was taken to Eastside Medical Center in an ambulance.

The arresting officer arrived at the hospital to follow-up, but Dawkins had already left around 8:45 p.m.

Police said although Dawkins is not considered a danger to the community, it is their responsibility to bring him back into custody. Once he is arrested, he will face charges for possession of a schedule II drug (cocaine), obstruction, and escape.

Dawkins was last seen wearing blue pants and a blue shirt. He is a black male, slim build, black short hair, 5 feet 11 inches tall, 170 lbs., with a scar on his elbow, and a tattoo on his chest that says, "wall mart." When he escaped, he was still wearing handcuffs.
