ATLANTA -- What started as a block party, according to police, ended with a man dead on Edgewood Avenue, Saturday morning. Police are still seeking a suspect.

Authorities said a woman in her 20s was shot in the arm and a man in his 30s was shot in his stomach. Both were transported to area hospitals, but the man, now identified as 32-year-old Mitchell Normon, Jr., later died.

The incident happened just before 3 a.m. in the 500 block of Edgewood near Boulevard around 3 a.m. Saturday. Investigators said a verbal argument turned physical on the sidewalk outside one of the bars before the gunman opened fire.

Police said the victims were a couple and that they are looking for a Hispanic male in a white jacket and a white male with a backpack in a hooded sweatshirt. At this point, they are still searching for the shooter, who was last seen fleeing north on Boulevard.

Police are hoping someone may have captured cell phone video of the incident or at the location when the shooting happened.

That information can be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS or directly to the police homicide unit at 404-546-4235.

This is not the first time a shooting has broken out in the popular nightlife district. In September, another person was shot and injured in the area after an argument just after last-call. Business owners and city leaders have had growing concerns about the large crowds that can pack the Edgewood area, and the recent shootings have increased those feelings.

Following the September shooting, several bar owners met with Atlanta Councilmen to address safety concerns and crowd control. Businesses and leaders promised to work together to come up with a solution to the problem.

Business owners in the area told 11Alive Saturday the issue with crowds has subsided since those meetings, and was not an issue when this latest shooting happened.
