MONROE COUNTY, Ga. -- Eight suspects are under arrest after a police chase across two counties early Thursday morning.
The chase began as an attempted traffic stop by a member of the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) - a subset of the Georgia Department of Public Safety similar to the Georgia State Patrol.
The officer was attempting to pull over a Ford F-150 on I-75 in Lamar County for a traffic offense, but the driver refused to yield. Instead, what began simply enough turned into a full-blown pursuit into Monroe County where deputies joined the chase just north of the city of Forsyth.
The pursuit continued to the intersection of Georgia routes 18 and 41 near Central Georgia Technical College - but ended in a wreck. Officials report that five men then jumped out the vehicle and ran but three were quickly apprehended.
As of 8:30 p.m. the other two were also caught along with three more suspects now facing charges for attempting to aid them in their escape. Police have confirmed the truck was stolen out of Bibb County and also believe it was involved in business burglaries in both Rockdale and Henry counties. In fact, three cash drawers were found in the bed of the truck.
So far police have released the names of the first four arrests and said that charges are still pending.
