BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. - Emerson Police are questioning a man who they said was firing a weapon and had a grenade in his possession.

Police chief Stan Bradley said it all started when the suspect, David Matthews from Dallas,Ga., met to sell his vehicle, a Ford Flex, to another man. This meeting happened around 12:52 Monday morning in a parking lot near the Love's Travel Stops gas station located at Exit 283 on I-75.

Chief Bradley said during that exchange, something went wrong causing Matthews to get upset. The potential buyer called 911 and told police Matthews made threats and had a grenade.

About an hour later police received a call saying Matthews was firing gunshots out of his vehicle window. Chief Bradley said off duty police officer Chris Barnes was on his way home, spotted the Ford Flex and followed the vehicle. Police found a gun and a military-style grenade in Matthew's pocket.

"It appeared the hand grenade had been altered from a training device to a device that looked like it could be live," the chief said.

Exit 283 was shut down until the situation was resolved. Bartow County Sheriffs' Office, Cartersville Police and the GBI bomb squad also assisted in this case.
