CONYERS, Ga. -- A driver in Rockdale County is lucky to still have a car after a man attempted to steal it while he was refueling.

The attempted "slider crime" happened on July 2 at a BP station at 1965 Sigman Road.  Photos from police show the suspect sneaking up to the passenger side of a white Dodge Challenger. The target's car has the driver door open.

It's not clear from details released by the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office exactly what happened, but the car theft attempt fails and the would-be car thief is seen walking away.

Investigators said he was taken to and picked up by a silver Chrysler 300 - a model made between 2005 and 2010.  Authorities think there were at least two other people inside.

Authorities have since released those photos in hopes of finding the people responsible and also warning the public to be cautious when leaving their vehicles open in public places.

Previous coverage of these thefts, deemed slider crimes because the suspects often slide into an open door while a victim is distracted, has shown that they can happen in mere seconds.

Anyone with information about this particular crime is asked to call Sgt. Jeremy Best at 770-278-8160 or email Jeremy.Best@RockdaleCountyGa.gov.
