MADISON, Ga. -- Morgan County officials confirm that two people are dead and a third is in custody after a shooting in Madison, Georgia.

According to Sheriff Robert S. Markley, the shooting happened around 4:40 p.m. on Dec. 4 when officers from several agencies responded to the call of a person dead on the road on Slaughter Veasley Road off Georgia Highway 83.

When police arrived, they found 53-year-old Colin Smith deceased in the road. After setting up a perimeter and deploying a helicopter, the suspect who was identified as 22-year-old Justin Slaughter, was found in the woods near the home and taken into custody.

Walton County SWAT also found 54-year-old Paula Slaughter, dead outside of the home.

Markley confirmed that the victims were friends and that the gunman is the son of victim, Paula Slaughter.

The incident is now being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and a motive is not clear at the time.
