COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- State highway officials announced plans, Friday, to search for ways to make a stretch of Veterans Memorial Highway in Mableton, Georgia safer.

Concerns about the roadway near Lindley Middle School resurfaced this week after school crossing guard Edna Umeh, 64, of Austell, Georgia was struck and killed Thursday by a driver in a school zone.

Witnesses claimed the driver, Lamonte Whitaker, 31, of Lithonia, Georgia was speeding and weaving through traffic at the time of the accident.

Whitaker was injured and has not been charged, although police have said charges are pending.

Cobb Transportation Director Jim Wilgus said the state and county are considering several possible safety proposals to enhance safety on the road, including the placement of medians with pedestrian "refuge islands."

Police said they will step up traffic enforcement in the area and team up with Cobb schools to protect traffic and pedestrians near the school.

"My prayer is that we will be responsive to make sure nothing like this ever happens again," Cobb Commissioner Lisa Cupid, who represents the area, said.
