Teen girl shot in Newton County drive-by shooting

Authorities said the 17-year-old victim was shot in the chest

COVINGTON, Ga. — A 17-year-old girl was shot Tuesday night in what police are describing as a drive-by shooting.

According to the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the shooting happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday at 350 Crestfield Circle. Authorities said they arrived to find the victim with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The teen was flown to Atlanta Medical Center for what investigators now describe as non-life threatening injuries.

11Alive's Neima Abdulahi spoke to neighbors who heard the gunshots.

"To me, it sounded like a full clip," one neighbor, Paul Shannon, described. "I'd say more than 10, because it went on."

Shannon said he remembered seeing a car speeding off, but initially thought nothing of it.

"When I first opened the door, I did see a car zip down the road, but I didn't think nothing about it. I didn't even know what kind of car it was," Shannon recalled. "I didn't think nothing about a drive-by."

Investigators are now looking over several video cameras that were in the area that they believe may have caught the crime. They're already looking for a red or burnt-orange Dodge Charger and two black males inside. Authorities said one of the men in the vehicle reportedly had a small afro hairstyle.

Investigator are now working to determine a motive and whether the shooting was targeted. But neighbors told 11Alive that incidents like these are very unusual, and it's got Shannon considering moving.

"I can't take that chance," he said.
