Victims trick Delta airline ticket scammers, leading to arrests

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - A husband and wife turned the tables on an internet scam after losing more than $1,000.

According to Gwinnett Police Department, a woman saw an ad on Craigslist for airline tickets. After responding to the ad, communicating with the sellers only via text and paying two installments totaling $1,650 using an app, the victims discovered that they'd been had.

The sellers gave the victims fake flight confirmation numbers. They found this out after contacting Delta who informed them that no flights had been purchased.

"This time, she wanted to meet the suspects in person and pay in cash. Just before the arranged meeting time, the woman called the Gwinnett County Police Department, and South Precinct officers met with the victim and the suspects at a local hair salon on Centerville Highway in unincorporated Snellville," Gwinnett police wrote in a release.

Police arrested 26-year-old Teisha Dunbar, of Decatur, and 29-year-old Nicholas Gates, of Palmetto, and charged them with two felony counts of Theft by Deception.

Officers issued an arrest warrant for Natiya Pope for the same charges.

Police are asking any other victims to come forward and contact the Gwinnett Police Department. If there are more victims, the charges could increase.

The lead investigator said, “This case and subsequent arrests would not be possible without the bravery, persistence, and determination of the victim who decided to turn the tables on the perpetrators.”
