DeKalb firefighters battle fire and ice at apartment complex

"I wake up my family, we grab everything that we can grab and we get out of there," Davis said.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – Over 20 people were displaced after a fire broke out at their apartment complex early Thursday morning.

DeKalb County Fire responded to a two-alarm fire at Oak Tree Villas apartment complex in the 3500 block of Clubhouse Circle.

When firefighters arrived, the blaze had extended past the roof. Crews used aerial ladders and ground crews to fight the fire from both above and the ground.

“Our firefighters are taking extra caution to make sure they don’t slip and fall and sustain any injuries,” DeKalb County Fire Department Captain Eric Jackson said.

Jackson said everyone was evacuated best to his knowledge.

Yolanda Davis, a resident at the apartment complex, said she woke up and saw smoke coming from her outlets. That’s when she looked out the window and saw the unit next to them engulfed in flames.

“I wake up my family, we grab everything that we can grab and we get out of there,” Davis said.

The Red Cross is helping to provide assistance to those who were displaced.
