Another school walkout on Friday? Here's why

Today, students at more than 2,100 schools across the country will once again leave their classrooms hoping to make a change in the country's gun laws. Their message: enough is enough.

"We are walking out to protest gun violence and in support of gun reform and also to honor victims who have been lost to gun violence," Lakeside High School senior Sawyer Wolf said.

Students first walked out March 14 - more than a month ago - to commemorate the lives of 17 students and teachers killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

So why are they doing it again?

Organizers said they're protesting inaction on the congressional, state and local levels because they haven't seen meaningful action to prevent gun violence.

"Gun violence affects people every day not only people in school shootings," sophomore Natalie Stembel said.

Why today?

April 20 marks the nineteenth anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School back in 1999. So, starting at 10 a.m., students plan to head outside for a 13 second moment of silence to honor the 13 people killed during the school massacre.

"This is totally led by students. They came up with the idea. They organized the event," Lakeside Principal Damian Bounds said. "It makes me proud. It makes me proud as a principal here at Lakeside High School to know that we have students who are very passionate about things that impact them."

Organizers hope this continues the national discussion about gun violence and laws - and lets elected leaders to know they plan to show up not just for events but also at the polls.

11Alive will have crews at several events happening across the metro area for National School Walkout Day. We'll keep you updated on air and online throughout the day.
