Middle school student brings loaded pistol to school

The gun was found in the student's bookbag.

SHARPSBURG, Ga. -- A middle school was placed on lockdown temporarily while school officials searched for a gun they heard was on campus.

Friday morning around 10:30 a.m., a Lee Middle School student was found with a loaded 9MM pistol in his bookbag, according to Coweta County Schools.

The administration of Lee Middle School received word that a student on campus had a fire arm.

Public Information Officer Dean Jackson said the School Resource Officer and the principal were able to locate the student, put that student in isolation and perform the search.

The investigation is ongoing and involves the Coweta County Sheriff's Department. During the initial search, the school was placed on a brief lockdown.

The school informed parents of the find just before noon with a robocall. A letter is also going home with students explaining what happened, stating "having a weapon on any school campus will not be tolerated. Please discuss the seriousness of these offenses with your student."
