A woman accused of hitting her mother with a hammer multiple times at their northwest Atlanta home has turned herself in, police said.

Police said Sandy Mathis, 56, turned herself over to the Fulton County Jail Dec. 20 after authorities issued warrants for her arrest for felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor simple battery against a person 65 or older.

The alleged assault happened late Monday night along Thomas Drive NW.

According to Atlanta Police Officer Jarius Daugherty, the 94-year-old mother told police Mathis hit her hand, back and head with a hammer.

Daughtery said Mathis denied the argument ever became physical, and a witness who was on the scene also told police no one was physically hurt.

According to a police report, officers didn't see any bruises on Mathis' mother aside from one on her hand. Police said the 94-year-old refused to receive help from EMS.

Daughtery said Mathis and her mother agreed to stay in separate areas of the home.

Authorities said they didn't feel there was sufficient evidence to support the claims the mother made. But, after an investigator found out the mother admitted herself to Grady Hospital when the officers left, and doctors determined the mother had hand injuries, the issued warrants for Mathis' arrest.

Mathis is expected to appear in front of a Fulton County judge for a first appearance on the felony charge Dec. 21 at 11 a.m.
