Mercedes-Benz USA is embracing its home base in Atlanta by putting a new luxury SUV to the test.

Is it powerful enough to scale Stone Mountain?

"Stone Mountain is iconic terrain down here, and it felt like the appropriate match for the G 550 4x4 Squared," said Mark Aikman, Marketing General Manager. "It is an incredible SUV with 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. With 17 inches of ground clearance, we really wanted to find an incredible way to show off this vehicle."

Aikman said his team used a stunt driver to take the G 550 up the back side of Stone Mountain, which used to be a granite quarry before becoming a public park in the 1920s.

"We found some of the steepest terrain," Aikman told 11Alive's Jennifer Leslie. "It's not just the incline but also the rockiness of the terrain. You have to scale huge steps"

The production team used drones to capture video near the top of the ascent.

The video will be used on the company's social media platforms to promote the new luxury SUV.

"The G 550 4x4 Squared did incredibly well," Aikman said. "Since moving to Atlanta, we've focused a lot of our productions in the area."

The G 550 goes sale in the first quarter of 2017. Mercedes-Benz is already taking orders but has not yet released the MSRP.
