Along with the flu, the norovirus is starting to peak again

Both viruses tend to peak during this time of year meaning they're easy to catch and do not respond to antibiotics.

The flu isn't the only thing causing misery in homes across the nation.

The norovirus, known as the stomach flu, is also circulating.

Both viruses tend to peak during this time of year meaning they're easy to catch and do not respond to antibiotics.

The seasonal flu is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus while the norovirus is a gastrointestinal infection that inflames the lining of the intestines.

Now, there is no vaccine for norovirus since it does not respond to anti-virals like Tamiflu. However, on it's usually not as serious and doesn't last as long as the seasonal flu.

Some people will even mistake the norovirus as food poisoning.

“With food poisoning, you can get the history with the people who ate in the same restaurant,” Medical correspondent Dr. Sujatha Reddy said. “It usually comes from food that’s been spoiled or has some bacteria.”

While the norovirus comes from an infected person there have been cases, like on cruise ships, where someone with the virus can infect the food.

So, what about the symptoms? Unlike the flu, you won't get any of the coughing or sniffling with the norovirus. Symptoms will include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramping.

Some of the symptoms are like that of the seasonal flu which makes diagnosing yourself difficult. Just like any other virus, doctors say the best way to protect yourself is to wash your hands, keep them away from your face, and try to avoid others who may be sick.

Dr. Reddy said if the virus doesn’t get better on its own after a couple of days, have a high fever, or have blood in your stool, you should then see a doctor. As for most people infected, it will go away on its own.
