Hospital, homes evacuated in Lumpkin County due to oxygen tanker wreck

The process to remove the oxygen from the tanker truck is dangerous, which is why the area around the accident, including Chestatee Regional Hospital, was evacuated.

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. -- A tanker truck has overturned Sunday morning and is leaking oxygen near the intersection of Crown Mountain Drive and Mountain Drive in Lumpkin County.

According to the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office, the remaining oxygen in the truck is being removed, however, the process is dangerous, and as a result, the area around the accident was evacuated -- including Chestatee Regional Hospital. Patients from the hospital have been transferred to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The process of offloading the oxygen could take up to 36 hours to complete. The sheriff's office says the intersection of Crown Mountain Drive and Mountain Drive will remain closed until further notice.

They said other major roadways in the area, including Georgia 60/South Chestatee Street, are open in the area.

No injuries have been reported.
