JASPER COUNTY, S.C. -- Interstate 95 in Jasper County was closed early Saturday morning due to the heavy rains and wind caused by Hurricane Matthew.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation tweeted that the road was "impassable" in both directions. They urged everyone in the region to stay off the roads.

The area has been prone to flooding in the past. Back on Memorial Day, a section of the roadway was shut down when 7 inches of rain fell in about two hours.

State troopers also said there were downed power lines and trees in the area. In Charleston County, officials said part of Highway 17 was also blocked by downed power lines.
