Interesting things Georgia cities ‘drop’ on New Year’s Eve

Think Atlanta's Peach Drop is a little strange? You haven't seen anything yet compared to what other Georgia cities 'drop.'

While many Americans across the nation think Atlanta is strange for dropping a giant peach at the stroke of midnight, they haven't seen anything yet.

The peach might be Georgia's staple New Year's Eve 'drop' but it's not the only one.

Many smaller cities across Georgia put their own spin on New Year's Eve drops and we're here to show you the funny, weird, and plain jaw-dropping.

Buzzard Drop: Perry, Ga.

Perry, Ga. is known for the Georgia National Fair, but their Buzzard Drop for New Year's Eve really is what makes them stand out. How Mobile, Al. drops a Moonpie, Perry wanted to make sure they were remembered on New Year's Eve with something just as unique. And that they are.

Cherry Blossom Ball Drop: Macon, Ga.

Fittingly in Cherry Street Plaza, Macon, Ga. drops a giant ball made of Cherry Blossoms. The city is famously known for their Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring, so why not ring in the new year with their popular flower?

Dropping of the Edelweiss: Helen, Ga.

Georgia's favorite little German town rings in the new year with the Dropping of the Edelweiss. The white flower is most famously recognized from the song 'Edelweiss' from The Sound of Music.

Geranium Drop: McDonough, Ga.

For the seventh year, McDonough is dropping a ball of Geraniums. People will be dancing the night away in the downtown square as they ring in 2018.

Gold Nugget Drop: Villa Rica, Ga.

No, it is not a golden chicken nugget but Villa Rica's Golden Nugget Drop does have a special meaning. Villa Rica is deemed the 'City of Gold' and that's why they drop a nugget of gold 32 feet when the clock strikes midnight.

Possum Drop: Tallapoosa, Ga.

Talk about interesting. The Possum Drop is West Georgia's largest New Year's Eve Celebration, according to their website. But why a possum? Before Tallapoosa got its name, miners who panned for gold in the region called the town Possum Snout. The more you know. Note, it is not a live possum.

Shamrock Drop: Dublin, Ga.

You shouldn't be surprised that Dublin, Ga. drops a Shamrock at the stroke of midnight. People flock to downtown to watch the 'brilliantly lit' shamrock drop atop the Fred Roberts.

Up The Cup: Savannah, Ga.

Instead of dropping something, Georgia's Coastal Empire does something different: they raise a cup. Known for their open-container policy on River Street, a giant cup is raised in front of Wet Willie's for the new year.

Now you know your options. So, which drop are you going to watch?
