There's no clear word on what triggered the incident, though the shooting comes at a difficult time. Authorities around the U.S. remain on high alert following the brutal killing of five police officers in Dallas and three in Baton Rouge, La., earlier this month.
San Diego's police chief says the second of two police officers shot is expected to survive.
Chief Shelley Zimmerman says in a Twitter post Friday morning that she had just left the hospital where the officer had just come out of surgery.
.@ChiefZimmerman just left the hospital where our second Officer has just come out of surgery. He is expected to survive!!
