MERIWETHER COUNTY, Ga. — A death investigation is underway after a 10-month-old was found dead during a traffic stop Wednesday in Meriwether.

Authorities found Ayla Reeves dead around 11:15 a.m., and charged 22-year-old Cameron Ramon Reese with aggravated assault and concealing the death of another.

Before they found Ayla's body, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Reese was watching the baby for the child's mother. At some point, Reese contacted the child's mom to say the child was not breathing.

Authorities said the mom came to North Depot Street to check on the baby, but soon grew suspicious of Reese's behavior after she found a mark under Ayla's eye.

When the pair got in the car, the GBI said the mom started asking questions about it. That's when Reese allegedly pulled out a steak knife. The mother jumped out of the car and sustained severe road rash.

Someone then contacted the Greenville Police Department about a stolen baby call.

Authorities conducted a traffic stop and pulled Reese over for speeding. However, soon after, the GBI said Reese left the area.

Authorities then found little Ayla dead in the car.

A Department of Corrections K-9 tracked down Reese on North Depot Street, where the suspect was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, a cause and manner of death for the 10-month-old is pending a GBI autopsy. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
