Carter said everyone deserves to know their family before meeting the father he never knew.
“I just wanted to know one way or another what I came from, who I came from,” Carter said.
His father, Mark Shumate, was just as excited to meet the son he never knew he had.
“I’m anxious. I’m grateful. I just can’t wait to see my son,” Shumate said.
“I didn’t sleep a wink,” he added.
The reunion brought together two men who beat the odds. Carter’s mother died he was only two-years-old. He survived a tough childhood and went on to graduate from Rutgers University.

“It feels good. It feels good to be here, to be next to him,” Carter said.
