APD: Keyless car thefts on the rise

Atlanta Police say they've seen a rise in thefts of vehicles with the "push button start" feature.

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Police say they've seen a rise in thefts of vehicles with the "push button start" feature.

Since cars with this feature don't require a key, some people may get out of their car without turning the button off. That's when police say someone lurking nearby can drive off with the vehicle since it's still running.

Police issued the warning after several vehicle thefts were reported at a Kroger parking lot on Glenwood Avenue.

Drivers are encouraged to turn the button off, even if you're exiting the car for just a brief time.

Police say gas stations could also be a hot spot for thefts because auto theft criminals can tell which cars are equipped with the feature, and they're watching for easy opportunities to drive off with your car.

Police have these tips for drivers to help avoid vehicle theft:

- When pumping gas, turn off your vehicle, remove the PBS key fob and lock the doors until you are finished pumping gas. Police said auto thieves know which vehicles are equipped with PBS look for opportunities to enter and steal vehicles. Authorities said ladies who leave their PBS in purses which are left in cars have been targeted.

- Keep your PBS in your pocket or somewhere in your physical possession.

- If you are going somewhere and you do not intend on taking your purse with you, store it in the trunk prior to leaving home. If criminals see you placing it in the trunk, they will attempt to enter your vehicle and access the trunk from the inside latch of your vehicle.
