'All-clear' given after chemical spill at Clark Atlanta University

Ten people were decontaminated and multiple halls were evacuated during the cleanup. But everyone appears to be OK according to fire officials.

ATLANTA — Authorities have given the all-clear after an apparent chemical spill at Clark Atlanta University that led to the decontamination of 10 people.

According to the university's vice president and chief advancement officer, Sam Burston, the campus will resume as it usually would on Monday.

Officials on the scene said that the people who were isolated and decontaminated had only minor complaints and appear to be OK. It's not known how many of the 10 people were students.

Atlanta Fire Rescue operated in two locations on the school's campus that were apparently where the spill occurred, according to a tweet from the department.

"When the individual spilled the chemical and it fell off the cart, he immediately evacuated the building and told everyone to get out of the building," Atlanta Fire Sgt. Cortez Stafford said. "So he did a good call with that."

The incident occurred at the Thomas Cole Research Center for Science and Technology on Clark Atlanta's campus but the Sage-Bacote and Trevor Arnett Halls were also evacuated.

Stafford said the person who spilled the chemical was actually being paid to move it. His company had a contract with Clark Atlanta University to remove the chemical from the building when it spilled off his cart creating a white cloud. The exact chemical name hasn't been released but officials said the employee didn't actually know what it was.

An update from Clark Atlanta University around 6 p.m. that Atlanta Fire had cleared the scene. Burston said the university will provide additional updates as they become available.
