An equipment malfunction in one of its data centers is the reason for an outage that caused customers not to have access to their bank accounts, a BB&T spokesperson said.
On Friday afternoon, a BB&T customer contacted 11Alive because she was not able to access her bank account to check her balance on line.
Brian Davis, the Director of Corporate Communications, said many of their banking services have been unavailable since late Thursday afternoon.
"Our systems are currently being restored and our automated Phone24 service and ATMs are now available. We want to make sure our clients understand some of the information they will see about their accounts has not yet been fully updated. We expect those balances and transactions to become current later today, and we'll continue to provide updates to our clients as that occurs," Davis said.
If clients incurred fees directly related to this outage, BB&T said it will waive or reimburse those fees.
