BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- President-Elect Donald Trump’s election victory has some local international communities concerned about his proposed immigration policy – to deport all undocumented immigrants with a criminal record, and to build a wall.
Brookhaven community members are preparing to have tough discussions about the possible changes.
On any given day, the Latin American Association provides resources to the Hispanic community in Brookhaven – legal services, taking English classes and computer literacy courses.
The facility will soon turn into a place where they can come to get clarity on president-elect Donald Trump’s immigration plans.
David Schaefer, director of policy and advocacy with the L.A.A, says they’ll host multiple forums to educate and address the concerns.
“I think some are anxious, because of where we are historically. And that’s the reason to have the forums,” he said.
Schaefer says some people have approached him with worries.
“We’re uncertain. Not knowing exactly what will play out,” he said.
The Latin American Association serves approximately 40,000 people a year, with a goal to educate, empower, and help immigrants integrate into their societies.
Schaefer says the last time metro-Atlanta Hispanics dealt with city wide concerns was March 2016 when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested 92 people during an immigration crackdown.
