Five people displaced after home goes up in flames

The Red Cross was called to assist the five who were displaced.

BUFORD, GA - Five people are without a home after their home went up in flames early Thursday morning.

At 1:49 a.m., Gwinnett County Fire got reports of a residential fire on the 4300 block of Sardis Church Road in unincorporated Buford.

When firefighters arrived, they found a single-story home with heavy fire. Crews were able to quickly deploy hose lines and were able to extinguish the fire from the inside of the residence.

The homeowner told firefighters that they were alerted by their smoke alarms and were able to escape from the home with no injuries.

The Red Cross was called to assist the five who were displaced.

A few hours later, Gwinnett Fire was fighting another residential fire near Lawrenceville, Ga.

Firefighters encourage all citizens to practice home fire safety, especially during the winter season.

"Be sure to install working smoke alarms on every level of the home and in each bedroom. Develop a home escape plan and practice fire drills regularly. Check and maintain home heating appliances such as the furnace, fireplace and space heater. "
