The city of Atlanta has paid nearly $17 million to buy the Sheraton hotel next to Hartsfield-Jackson, a property it needs to carry out its $6 billion airport expansion.
The 395-room Sheraton Atlanta Airport Hotel will layoff 145 employees, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development. The state agency published a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notice announcing the pending job cuts.
The hotel will likely close in late July, according to a source familiar with the sale.
Management is working with other hotels in the area to find new jobs for the staff, said Dave Gleam, director of sales and marketing with Sheraton Atlanta Airport hotel. Expel Hospitality, which operates in the Sheraton and hotels in other cities, will work with staff that may want to relocate, he said.
Airport spokesman Reese McCranie confirmed the city bought the hotel for $16.7 million for the airport’s long-term expansion.
