ATLANTA, Ga – A clemency hearing has been set for a man convicted of killing a Lumpkin County woman in 2001.
The state Board of Pardons and Paroles will consider the request from Steven Frederick Spears, who is set to die by lethal injection on Nov. 16 at 7 pm. The board will hear from Spears’ representatives at 9 am on Nov. 15.
Spears received the death sentence for the October 2001 murder of Sherri Holland after a March 2007 jury trial.
Spears would be the eighth person in Georgia this year to be executed, more than any other in the state since capital punishment was reinstated nationwide in 1976.
Most recently, Gregory Lawler was executed on Oct. 19 for killing an Atlanta police officer and seriously wounding his partner.
Spears is scheduled to be executed at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, Ga.
