TYRONE, Ga. - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened around 10 p.m. Tuesday near the Fayette-Coweta county line in Tyrone.

Coweta County deputies responded after receiving a call for a stolen pickup that hit a guardrail on Interstate 85 near Exit 56 (Collinsworth Road). According to the GBI, the pickup had been driving erratically before it struck the guardrail on the interstate.

Investigators said the driver ditched the truck on the interstate and fled before deputies arrived.

Not too far from where the car was abandoned, the GBI said the suspect forced his way into a home in the 400 block of Palmetto Road, in an attempted to steal another vehicle. The homeowner confronted the suspect and fired a weapon at the suspect, but missed. The intruder drove off with the homeowner's vehicle and Fayette County deputies pursued.

Meanwhile, Coweta County deputies and Georgia State Patrol officers set up a roadblock at the Fayette-Coweta line where the suspect crashed. Investigators said the suspect got out of the car and fired at the officers.

The officers returned fire, killing the suspect. No officers were injured during the incident.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the GBI’s Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur. The case will be turned over to the Fayette County District Attorney's Office for review once the investigation is complete.
